Domenech calls on Zidane to produce something special
France coach Raymond Domenech is looking to Zinedine Zidane to produce fireworks in Tuesday's FIFA World Cup? last 16, second round fixture against Spain.
The French midfield giant returns to the fray after his suspension against Togo in what could be the 34-year-old's final game before retirement if les Bleus succumb to Luis Aragones' high flyers in Hanover.
Domenech said on Monday: "The fact that it could be Zidane's last match isn't really the issue for us now. This is a game for the entire team in the second round of the World Cup and I'm expecting something special from him.
"I'm asking him to use his talent to help the team as I ask all the players and not just because it could be his final match."
Domenech told the traditional eve of match press conference that in a break from tradition he would wait until three-quarters of an hour before kick-off to announce his team.
"The trick is to know at what moment Spain are going to release theirs," he explained.
"It's not a game. They announce a team, I'm waiting to see it. We'll see what happens, we have to look at how it pans out with the opposition.
"It's not a question of adapting to it but you have to weigh up your rivals' strengths and weaknesses, that's important.
"I'm keen to know how they're going to play to know what to tell my players, how to tell them and who to tell."
Domenech introduced Juventus striker David Trezeguet alongside Thierry Henry up front in the 2-0 win over Togo which sealed their second round berth but with Zidane now back in midfield he is expected to revert to Henry as a solo striker with Frank Ribery bolstering midfield.
He said the mood in the French camp had picked up a beat in the run up to the Spanish confrontation.
"There is pressure, but it's not the paralysing kind, it's pressure that generates excitement."
The 57-year-old said he was prepared to put his strong links with Spain to one side for the occasion.
"My father comes from near Barcelona, I've got family who live there. I have an affection for the country but just as players who find themselves up against their friends I'll put it to one side for the game."
He revealed that he will fall back on his traditional pre-match prep talk, urging the team to seize the moment.
"I always tell them to give everything, the worst thing to happen is that you come off the pitch regretting not going for it."
