"Now the real World Cup starts." So said Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann, raising the temperature as expectations grow in the host nation. Germany kick off the Round of 16 of the 2006 FIFA World Cup? on Saturday at 17:00 (CET) in Munich. And it is all or nothing from here on in.
While the game could bring the prospect of a world title on home soil one step nearer, the players are only too aware of how quickly it could all disappear. “One mistake now might mean going out,” warned captain Michael Ballack, while goalkeeper Jens Lehmann admitted: “I hope the tournament still has a long way to go for us.”
Germany determined to stay the course
Germany are fully focused ahead of their showdown with the Scandinavians and acutely aware of the pressure on their shoulders. Klinsmann’s men seem capable of riding the wave of euphoria sweeping Germany without losing their focus or the ability to perform at their peak. The team insist this is no time to dwell on their three victories in Group A, which will all have been in vain if Lars Lagerback’s men send the host nation tumbling out.
