Aussies need first-class coach to replace Hiddink, says Moore

OHRINGEN (AFP) - Defender Craig Moore says it's vital that Australia carry on from the enormous success of Guus Hiddink and recruit a first-class head coach to take over after the World Cup.

Hiddink, recognised as one of the game's prominent coaches, heads off after the World Cup to take charge of the Russian national team, having taken Australia to the cusp of the second round in their first finals' campaign in 32 years.

The Australians have been a revelation in Germany under Hiddink's meticulous stewardship and have beaten Asian champions Japan and put up a strong showing against world champions Brazil.

Should they at least draw with Croatia in Stuttgart on Thursday they will advance to the last 16 of the World Cup.

Football Federation Australia (FFA) boss Frank Lowy is in Europe and believed to be sounding out several high-profile international candidates to replace Hiddink, but such is the momentum the Dutchman has given Australian football, that Moore sees the next appointment as imperative.

"Obviously, the FFA have got their names for the job, but I do believe that it needs someone with a huge amount of experience because it's been a fantastic experience with Guus and it can only obviously benefit the team," Moore said at the team pre-match press conference here Wednesday.

"It is important for the future of Australian football that we don't move backwards and we continue to improve and go forward and for me that means getting a first-class manager in.

"If that means (assistant) Graham Arnold or whoever there is going to be a lot of candidates because it is a nice job."

Such is Hiddink's profound effect on the game in Australia in his 11 months in charge, that a similar appointment looks unlikely, but with the Asian Cup finals next year, the 2008 Beijing Olympic football tournament and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa there is plenty ahead for Australian football.
