COLOGNE (AFP) - German police detained 15 England fans who clashed with police overnight ahead of their country's World Cup match against Sweden.

All the fans were later released, although six have been banned from re-entering Cologne, police said Tuesday.

The violence was sparked by a group of drunken England supporters who attempted to climb a statue to drape it with England flags after a day of drinking in bars and pubs in the western city.

When one fan fell, police used pepper spray to disperse other supporters who began to throw bottles. Several police officers suffered cuts from glass.

Six were arrested in that incident, while others were picked up around the city.

British police officers helping their German colleagues during the World Cup said the violence was regrettable, but did not believe it heralded a return to the behaviour seen at the 1998 World Cup when England fans caused chaos in the French port of Marseille or at Euro 2000 in Belgium.

Assistant chief constable Stephen Thomas, who is in charge of the British police operation at the World Cup, said: "We saw the best of the England fans during the day and some of the worst in the evening.

"I think it is a reflection of how far we have moved on that we can be disappointed by this."

The behaviour of England fans at the first two matches in the World Cup was praised as "exemplary" by German police.

There were up to 70,000 fans in both Frankfurt and Nuremberg for the games against Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago respectively.

England have already qualified for the next round, but Tuesday's match with Sweden would determine if they won Group B or finished runners-up.
