MUNICH (AFP) - Mark Viduka believes the heavy training workload the Australian squad endured before the World Cup means his team can now match it with the best.

The Australian skipper says the two weeks' training regimen was like 'going to war', but coach Guus Hiddink's training methods and ideas have paid off as the team prepares to face its moment of truth against world champions Brazil here Sunday.

The 42nd-ranked Australians, under Hiddink, have beaten 22nd-rated Uruguay in their playoff last November to reach the World Cup finals, and have subsequently downed European champions and No.20 Greece, drawn with No.3 Holland and defeated No.18 Japan in their World Cup opener.

It is a far cry from a year ago when Australia, under Frank Farina, didn't win a game at the Confederations Cup in Germany with its defence in disarray, losing 3-4 to Germany, 2-4 to Argentina and 0-2 to Tunisia paving the way for Hiddink to take over.

Viduka, who has scored only six times in 36 internationals for his country, said Hiddink, ranked among the best coaches in world football, had transformed the Australian team.

"There was a different style of approach to what we had been used to in the national team and from our clubs as well," the Middlesbrough striker said here Saturday.

"There is a work ethic there and we've had very hard training sessions.

"I mean, two weeks ago before we came to the World Cup you probably thought we were going to war because the amount of training we were doing was unbelievable.

"But it has paid off. In the end it showed that we are fit in the way we play, we play the ball around more than we did in previous years and now we can match it with the best."

That was evident when Australia scored three times in the last eight minutes to overrun Japan in brutal afternoon heat in Kaiserslautern last Saturday.

Hiddink, who leaves the Australian team after the World Cup to take up a lucrative coaching deal with Russia, said the Australian players had little confidence when he took over last July.

"The players responded to my vision almost immediately after our first meeting (training camp) in Holland," he said Saturday.

"We had a lot of talks and a lot of training, maybe for them it was a different approach, a different way of training.

"But they adapted themselves very well as players to what was asked."
