HAMBURG, May 15 (Reuters) - Security for the best-protected team at the World Cup will get even tighter on Thursday when the Americans move from a luxury hotel in the heart of Hamburg sealed off from the public to a vast U.S. air base at Ramstein.
But it was a matter of convenience rather than security that prompted the U.S. side to request an exemption from staying at a FIFA-recommended hotel in a distant town like Mannheim and instead live in spartan dorm-style accommodations at Ramstein.
"It was just a convenience factor at Ramstein," U.S. coach Bruce Arena said on Thursday before his team flies south to the major U.S. air base that is home to the 435th Air Base Wing, which supports the 86th Airlift Wing, 38th Combat Support Wing.
"I feel a lot safer with all those bombers coming down the road," Arena said with a laugh before the match at Kaiserslautern, a short 20-minute ride to Kaiserslautern.
The U.S. team will spend 36 hours on the base before their Group E match against Italy on Saturday at Kaiserslautern, the smallest World Cup venue with few hotels. The U.S. stayed four days at Ramstein before a friendly against Poland in March.
