HAMBURG, Germany (AP) -- Security for the U.S. World Cup team remained unchanged following the killing of Iraqi terrorist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi by American forces, a U.S. Soccer Federation official said Friday.
Since arriving last week, American soccer players have been monitored at their hotel by a force that includes German police, State Department officials and private security. The FBI and CIA also have been involved, and the team's bus is accompanied by a convoy of security vehicles.
U.S. Soccer Federation spokesman Jim Moorhouse said that already heavy security wasn't altered by al-Zarqawi's death.
"The parameters we have in place are something we're very comfortable with," he said.
Duane Butcher, U.S. consul general in Hamburg, declined comment on specific security measures being provided the team.
However, he said, "We are extremely pleased by the level of security being provided by the host country authorities."
Al-Zarqawi was killed in a U.S. airstrike Wednesday.
"Honestly, coming it's a little bit scary, and you're worried about what's going to happen," midfielder Landon Donovan said earlier in the week. "But you get here and these people are serious about what they're doing. They enjoy what they're doing and they're not going to let anything happen to us."
Donovan said security officials briefed the team once, saying there is nothing to worry about.
"I'm fairly savvy to what's going on in the world, and I understand, but at the same time no one predicted 9-11," he said. "You can't say just because we're here, we're more prone. You can't think that way. Something could happen back home right now, and no one would have predicted it. People like to say we're higher risk, but I feel very safe in what's going on."
At the 2002 World Cup in South Korea, a tank was parked outside the U.S. hotel in Seoul, and a tank was on the tarmac when the U.S. plane arrived for the Americans' game against the host nation.
"This is nothing compared to Korea four years ago," midfielder DaMarcus Beasley said. "You had helicopters at our training. We had tanks following us from the airport."
U.S. coach Bruce Arena said the team hasn't been bothered by the security.
"The German authorities have done a fantastic job," he said. "We're quite comfortable in this setting."
