In swimming, World Championships bronze medalist Sun Yang overtook favorite Zhang Lin to win the men's 1500m freestyle Saturday.

Zhang Lin is China's first male swimming world champion and world record holder. He was earlier considered the strongest contender for gold in Saturday's final.

He set early pace in the long-course race, but lost his lead in the middle stages after Sun Yang pulled away. Sun powered home in 14 minutes 54.87 seconds, over ten seconds clear of Zhang who came in third. Dai Jun, member of the 4x200m free relay champion team, took silver.

The Shanghai team, led by swimming favourites Liu Zige and Pang Jiaying, won the gold medal in the women's 4x100m individual medley relay. Shanghai left the P-L-A team in second place, and the host Shandong team took third.
