Obama on Texas shooting spree

With Americans still in shock over the shooting rampage in Texas, US President, Barack Obama, has expressed the nation's is grief for those killed. The lone gunman killed 13 people and injured 30 in the attack.

Obama has requested a thorough investigation into what he said is the worst mass shooting ever at an American military base.

Barack Obama, U.S. President, said, "We don't know all the answers yet and I would caution against jumping to conclusions until we have all the facts. What we do know is that there are families, friends and an entire nation grieving right now for the valiant men and women who came under attack yesterday."

Obama has ordered the flags at the White House and other federal buildings to be flown at half-mast.

Authorities said the suspect, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, a US Army psychiatrist, went on a shooting spree on Thursday afternoon at the base. Thirteen people were killed and 30 others injured in the shootings at the Texas army post. Hasan was among the 30 people wounded and remained in hospital on a ventilator on Friday. All but two of the injured were still in hospital, and all were in stable condition.

Fort Hood police Sergeant Kimberly Munley and her partner responded within three minutes of reported gunfire at the base. Commanders at Fort Hood credited her for stopping the shooting rampage.

Colonel John Rossi, Fort Hood Deputy Commanding General, said, "Both exchanged fire and both were wounded in that exchange and that happened relatively quickly when she arrived and again her efforts were superb."

Prior to beginning his duties at Fort Hood in July, the 39-year-old Army major worked at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center for six years, pursuing his career in psychiatry. His family said he once told them he suffered discrimination in the U.S. Army for being a Muslim.
