The 60th anniversary of the founding of New China is just a few days away. The head of the General Administration of Sport, Liu Peng, has just briefed reporters on the achievements over the past 60 years.

Liu Peng says the past 60 years have witnessed a rapid development in China's sports scene.

In 1952, Chairman Mao Zedong called on the people to develop sports, and build up their bodies.

In the following decades, outstanding individuals and teams have emerged. Chinese have broken many world records.

Last year, China's dream of hosting an Olympic Games came true. The Games were a great success and the Chinese delegation made a historic breakthrough, topping the gold medal tally at 51.
