China to announce new energy plan on fighting global warming

World leaders have gathered at UN headquarter in New York for the UN climate change summit. The summit is designed to mobilize the political will needed to reach a deal at the UN climate change talks in Copenhagen in December. Chinese President Hu Jintao is scheduled to announce China's new plans on fighting global warming.

Warm-up activities on Monday set the tone of the historic summit. The gathering is the largest high-level meeting on climate change. Leaders of participating countries are urged countries to put aside differences, to find a common strategy on fighting global warming.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says he hopes leaders will "publicly commit" to striking a deal at the Copenhagen meeting in December. That is: to narrow the differences between developed and developing countries.

As the largest developing country and a major economy, many countries are focusing on China's actions and promises.

In his address to the summit, President Hu Jintao is expected to lay out new plans for extending China's energy-saving programs and targets for reducing the "intensity" of its carbon emissions.

Hu is also expected to relay China's positive messages on pushing for a global effort against climate change, and to guarantee a successful outcome at the upcoming Copenhagen meeting.

But President Hu is expected to reiterate China's stance on a "common but different responsibility" between developed and developing countries.
