President Hu: Efforts still needed to promote Xinjiang's economic development

President Hu Jintao has concluded an inspection tour of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. He met representatives from all walks of life, and praised their contributions to the region's stability and prosperity.

President Hu Jintao visited Urumqi, Aksu, and many other parts of Xinjiang. His major concerns were the economic development and social progress in Xinjiang as well as the well-being of the Xinjiang people. President Hu Jintao visited Aksu,Changji,karamay, Shihezi and Urumqi. President Hu gathered first hand information on economic and social development of the region, visited local residents and garrisons.

A month and a half after the July 5th riot, Urumqi has returned to order, thanks to the firm leadership of central and local governments, and the joint efforts of Xinjiang people.

President Hu met with individuals who contributed to the stability of the region, local officials and people from ethnic and religious communities. He asked many questions regarding their work and life and spoke highly of their contributions to safeguarding ethnic unity and social stability in the region.

Ten representatives spoke at the meeting. Hamiti Ahmet helped save 18 people escape the rioters on July 5th. Vice Dean of Xinjiang Islamic Scripture Academy, Abudureqip Tumuniyaz sheltered 15 people who were chased by rioters. Wu Mingzhu is with the China Engineering Academy. She has spent 50 years studying Hami melon breeding in Xinjiang. They strongly condemned the atrocities of separatists and expressed their determination to safeguard the social stability in Xinjiang.
