2010-04-23 17:24 BJT

Premier Wen Jiabao is calling for more efforts to develop renewable energy to cope with rising domestic fuel demand and severe energy shortages.

The Premier made the comments at the first meeting of the National Energy Commission in Beijing on Thursday. He says the government must ensure non-fossil fuels account for 15 percent of China's energy consumption in 2020.

The government will also aim to cut carbon dioxide emissions by up to 45 per cent in that same time period. The targets will be incorporated into the country's long-term economic and social development plan.
