Beijing, a city of almost 20 million residents, has to solve the problem of traffic jams. Traffic regulators say the city will work hard to adopt several new measures to develop a fast commuter system by 2015.

According to the Beijing Municipal Committee of Transport, a fast commuter system requires more convenient connections between bus and metro stations. This will allow passengers to transfer easily between buses and subways, creating a more efficient traffic system.

Wang Gang, Director of Information Center of BMCT said "We have started relevant studies this year, and in 2 or 3 years a series of model projects will be set up in Beijing. We hope the fast commuter system will be established by 2015. Our goal is to have the whole public transport system in Beijing be highly efficient, convenient and comfortable."

Currently a smart bus scheduling system has been set up in Beijing. Under the plan, thousands of buses can be dispatched efficiently. The system will be further improved in the future with the installation of real-time GPS terminals. The GPS technology will provide maps and real-time information on traffic. This will allow drivers to choose routes more efficiently. City officials hope to place a million GPS terminals throughout the city by 2015.
