Hong Kong has just finished tallying up votes on who will sit on the 2016 Election Committee. Elected members will then go on to select the SAR's Chief Executive in March next year.

According to Electoral Affairs Commission Chairman Justice Fung Wah, the city notched a record turnout of 46 percent of eligible voters taking part. Some 107,000 voters cast their ballots for the 733 seats in the 1,194 electors Election Committee.

The remaining 461 seats are either held by ex-officio members or have been returned as uncontested. The turnout rate was nearly 20 percentage points higher than that of the last committee election in 2011, when the overall turnout rate was only 27.6 percent.

Hong Kong's current Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying announced last week that he would not seek re-election in 2017.
