Thousands of mourners in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu have gathered to pay their respects to late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.

The 68-year-old politician died on Monday night at a hospital in the state's capital city Chennai after suffering a heart attack. A seven-day mourning period has been declared. State Finance Minister O.P. Panneerselvam was sworn in as state chief within hours of her death.
