Rescuers in North China's Hebei province have recovered the body of a six-year-old boy who had been stuck in a well for over 100 hours. The boy had accidentally fallen in on Sunday.

After over 100 desperate hours. Rescuers located the young boy trapped in an abandoned well, 40 meters down. But they was too late.

"The boy who fell into the well has been found. But unfortunately medical experts have confirmed that the child has no sign of life," said Wu Sujie, deputy commander-in-chief of rescue team.

The six-year-old had been helping his father harvest vegetables in Baoding city on Sunday when he fell.

His father sent out a call for help on the social-network platform WeChat.

The response was immediate.

Over 500 rescuers and some one hundred excavators were involved.

Many members of the public donated food and money.

Locals also cooked for the rescue team on site.

Digging was the only choice, as the well was only 30 centimeters in diameter, too narrow for any adult.

Efforts were hampered by the soft, sandy soil, which tends to collapse.

The local government says it will inspect all of the old dry wells in the region to prevent similar tragedies.
