Stay in the PRC for snooker and the inaugural edition of the China Championship in Guangzhou. There Ding Junhui was playing his third tournament in a row after and the home favorite was far from his peak form while facing Marco Fu in the first round.

Ding is already down two frames to none against the veteran from Hong Kong and things don't get any better when he misses this easy red, forcing him back to his chair and he clearly looks out of sorts.

Ding then makes another costly mistake in the same frame when he misses a tough cut back on the black. Fu seizes the opportunity and sinks the crucial pink on his way to clear the table. The Hong Kong player would set up a 3-0 lead before Ding takes the final frame of the first session.

Fu maintains his lead and is now up 5-3. The ninth frame comes down to the black, but both players miss a series of attempts. Ding has some good chances to pot the final ball, but the world number four was simply not himself this day and the frustration shows when he swipes his cue in anger. Fu would go on to win 6-3.

Ding said, "I didn't sink the ball. It's a fact. If I made it, then I would have made it. I just wanted to get out of the run as soon as possible. I had said I wanted to keep my momentum going, but I can't be on top every time."

World No. 3 Trump upset by Carter 6-4 in first round

Mark Selby, who beat Ding in the International Championship final last weekend, faces Anthony McGill. The World number one would shine with several brilliant snookers on his way to establish a 5-1 lead after six frames.

McGill cuts the margin to three after making a string of spectacular pottings in the seventh including this brilliant shot on the red to find the corner pocket as one of his highlights in the frame.

But Selby regains control in the next frame. Thanks to a run of 80, the reigning World Champion clinches the 6-2 victory over McGill to reach the second round of the China Championship.

In other matches on Day One, Mark Allen overcame Ricky Walden 6-4 but there was another upset as Judd Trump was defeated 6-4 by Ali Carter.
