An exhibition of masterpieces from the Centre Pompidou in Paris has given Shanghai residents a chance to explore the diversity and richness of modern art. The centre is considered Europe's leading museum of modern and contemporary art.

Centre Pompidou kicks off display in Shanghai

Shanghai Exhibition Center in Jing'an District was crowded with visitors today. They were eager to see the 71 artworks on display from the Pompidou's collection of 120-thousand works showcasing the history of western art between 1906 and 1977. The exhibit is organized chronologically, with one piece selected for each of the years covered. 1906 was the year marking the advent of the avant-garde Fauvism movement in France, while 1977 was the year the center opened to the public. Highlights include "Double Portrait with a Glass of Wine" by Marc Chagall, Pablo Piccaso's "The Muse", and Marcel Duchamp's ready-made sculpture "Bicycle Wheel".

"I didn't have time to go to the museum when I was in Paris, but I'm happy to see the masterpieces in Shanghai. The chronological order helps me better explore the history of western modern art. "

However, there was one work missing for the year 1945. Instead, a music player was suspended from the ceiling and playing "La vie en rose", the signature song of French singer Edith Piaf. The famous love song was written in 1945, when World War II ended.

"I think it's a very romantic way to commemorate the end of World War II. At first I was looking for a painting or sculpture. When I was standing under the player I heard the song. It really surprised me. "

This is the fourth time Centre Pompidou has exhibited part of its collection in Shanghai. Its chairman says more exchanges will be held in the future.

"Centre Pompidou showed interest in Shanghai years ago. The city's vitality and its blending of diverse cultures are all among the reasons that attract us. We have been in close contact with the Shanghai government, and hope that a Centre Pompidou branch can be opened along the western Bund," said Serge Lasvignes, chairman of Centre Pompidou.
