Five-time NBA champion Kobe Bryant will be honored Wednesday with a ceremony in Los Angeles, the city where he played his entire 20-year professional career as a Laker. And as part of the tribute to be held at city hall, officials have declared August 24 as Kobe Bryant Day.

The Black Mamba, who just turned 38 the day before, received thanks in the ceremony for his single-minded dedication to excellence, the fans, and the entire area of Los Angeles.

In his 20 years in the Lakers gold and purple, Bryant helped LA win five NBA championships. He was named the finals MVP twice and the league MVP once in the 2007-2008 season.

Bryant’s career tally of 33,643 points, the third most in league history, is behind only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone. Bryant was chosen to play in the league’s All-Star Game 18 times.
