The U.S. men’s basketball team had been lackluster in the early stages of the Olympic tournament, squeaking by a couple of opponents, including a three-point win against Serbia, and the Europeans faced them in the title game, hoping to upset the champs and deny them their third straight title.

The U.S. romped to a 96-66 victory over Serbia to claim the gold medal. The U.S. won all eight games in Rio, extending their winning streak in the Olympics to 25 games.

Host nation wins first men’s volleyball title since 2004

There was final day joy for the hosts Brazil as the men’s volleyball team won gold. They beat Italy in three sets in the final. It was their first Olympic title in 12 years.

Kenyans crowned champions of both men’s and women’s races

Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya won the men’s marathon, crossing the line in two hours eight minutes and 44 seconds. Feyisa Lilesa of Ethiopia came second. It means Kenya claimed both the marathon titles in Rio.
