Sun Yang fails to qualify for 1500m freestyle

China's Sun Yang was the defending champion of 1,500 metre freestyle, and would be looking to continue his reign. But the 24-year-old did not seem to be at his best, apparently dealing with a cold and fever, days after winning gold in the 200-metre freestyle several days ago. 

Starting in Lane seven, Sun would be in second after 600 meters, but later drops to in seventh spot. Sun's time would not be good enough to make it to the final, as he fails to progress out of the preliminaries. (SWIPE)

In men's 50m freestyle, Anthony Ervin of the United States captures the title. As Frenchman Florent Manaudou grabs silver, American Nathan Adrian was third. 

KATIE LEDECKY CAPTURES 800-METER FREESTYLE

American sets new world record in women’s distance race (8:04.79)

Katie Ledecky of the United States destroyed the field in the 800-meter freestyle, breaking her own world record -- finishing in 8 minutes, four point 79 seconds, it is her fourth gold of the Games. 

MADELINE DIRADO FASTEST IN 200-METER BACKSTROKE

In the women's 200-meter backstroke final, American Madeline Dirado would power to success, denying a fourth gold medal to Katinka Hosszu. The Hungarian would settle for the silver and Canada's Hilary Caldwell grabs bronze.
