China would battle Germany for a spot in the semis. The Germans, have won the world cup on two occasions and would look to get past the Steel Roses in an effort to continue their quest for a first ever Olympic crown.

The Europeans prevailing 4-3 in a penalty shootout after the squads played to a 1-1 draw.

Lisa Dahlkvist converted Sweden's final penalty after Alex Morgan and Christen Press missed for the holders in the shootout.

This marks the first time the U-S have not made the final since soccer was included in the Olympic program.

In women's volleyball, China fell in straight sets to Serbia. China now has two wins and two losses in four group matches, and close out play in Pool B against the U-S Sunday. Win or lose, Lang Ping's side have earned a spot in the quarter-finals.

In men's basketball, China suffered their fourth straight loss in the group stage falling 93-68 to Australia. Yi Jianlian led the way for China, scoring 20 points and adding 9 rebounds. Their next game is Sunday against Serbia and cannot afford to lose anymore games, or they will be eliminated.

And the two-time defending champions from the U-S survived a last-second scare from Serbia to win 94-91. Bogdan Bodganovic's three-pointer in the dying seconds failed to go in, giving the Americans the victory. The so-called "Dream Team" improve to 4-and-oh in pool play.
