Phelps wins his 22nd Olympic gold

Michael Phelps has 21 gold medals, 12 individual titles, the most of the modern Games. But not most all-time, as he is tied with Leonidas of Rhodes, an ancient Olympian, who also had a dozen titles to his name. Phelps though could become the greatest Olympian of this or any era, with another triumph in the the men’s 200-meter individual medley.

China’s Wang Shun qualified for the final, but most of the attention was focused on Phelps in Lane 4. And Phelps blows past the field by more than a body length as the Baltimore Bullet claims his 22nd gold medal. Kosuke Hagino takes the silver, and Wang the bronze while Ryan Lochte finished fifth.

China’s Xu Jiayu and Li Guangyuan finish fourth and sixth

In the final of the men’s 200-meter backstroke, China’s Xu Jiayu and Li Guangyuan would finish fourth and sixth respectively. Ryan Murphy of the United States was the fastest to claim his second gold. He also won the 100-meter backstroke title. Australian Mitchell Larkin got silver and Russia’s Evgeny Rylov the bronze.

Japanese swimmer Kaneto claims gold, Russia’s Efimova silver

In the women’s 200-meter breaststroke final, China’s Shi Jinglin was strong over the last 50 meters as the 23-year-old claimed the bronze medal. The gold went to Japanese swimmer Rie Kaneto while Russian Yulia Efimova took silver.

Chinese swimmer unable to make final of three events he raced 

In men’s 50-meter freestyle. Ning Zetao failed to qualify for the semifinal. The Chinese bowed out in the preliminaries of all the events he took part in, two individuals and one relay. His compatriot Yu Hexin also failed to advance.
