It was another busy day at the Rio Olympics where China continues to pick up gold medals. In women’s table tennis, China was assured of a top two finish with Ding Ning taking on her teammate Li Xiaoxia in a repeat of the London 2012 final. Four years ago, Li came out on top, but the tables were turned this time around in a high speed battle of spins and smashes.

In this exciting encounter, Ding was forced to come from one set down before prevailing 4-3 to claim the gold medal. It was the 26-year-old world champion’s second Olympic gold, and clearly an emotional one, having won the team title with China in 2012.

Xiang Yanmei looked to outmuscle her opponents to claim the gold medal in the women’s 69-kilogram weightlifting division. Xiang would overcome a bump to the back of the head to lift 116 kilograms in the snatch, and then follow that with 145 kilograms in the clean and jerk. That was enough to win the gold medal. China now has four golds in weightlifting in Rio.

In the men’s 77kg division, Lü XiaoJun broke his own world record in the snatch by hoisting 177 kg. But Nijat Rahimov of Kazakstan lifted a stunning 214kg in the clean and jerk to win gold, while Lü took the silver.

In the green pool, Qin Kai and Cao Yuan, the reigning world champs in the men’s 3-meter springboard, came in as heavy favorites. But China’s bid to win all eight diving events was ended by Jack Laugher and Chris Mears, who give Great Britain its first gold medal in Olympic diving. The Chinese pair had to settle for bronze behind the USA’s duo Sam Dorman and Mike Hixon.

Over in men’s judo, China’s Cheng Xunzhao won bronze in the 90kg division, to give China its first medal in the sport at the Rio Games. The third place finish also marks China’s best result ever in the weight class. Japan’s Mashu Baker won gold.
