China's women's volleyball squad were looking to bounce back after an opening game loss. The 2015 World Cup winners, were upset by the Netherlands in five sets. Lang Ping's side could ill-afford another loss, and were focused against another European side -- Italy.

China would take a 5-1 lead in the opener thanks to a series of service errors by the Italians. The Europeans storm back to level it at 13, but China again took control and win the set 25-21.

The following two sets were much easier for the Chinese team. With four aces in the second set, they take the frame 25-21. And sweep to victory thanks a 25-16 triumph in the third.

With the victory China sit in second in the standings four points, one behind the US who have two victories. Lang Ping's team will next face Puerto Rico on Wednesday.

Chinese women's basketball team faced African champions Senegal. The PRC got off to an 11-and-oh run and never trailed in the first half, as they took a 47-38 lead into the break.

The girls in red played their best quarter in the tournament in the third as they built a 20-point lead, to go in front at 73-53, and cruised to a 101-64 victory, their first of the tournament -- and keep their hopes of advancing alive.

China sit third in their group, with the US and Canada holding down the top two spots. China must keep winning to try and qualify for the quarter-finals. They face Spain next.
