Iran FM meets IAEA chief on nuclear fuel offer

Iran's foreign minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, has met the UN atomic watchdog chief to discuss a stalled nuclear fuel offer.

Mottaki described the meeting with Yukiya Amano as "very friendly," adding that the discussion could help to establish trust among related parties. He said Iran has the right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, and that sanctions against his country are unfair.

The discussed offer calls for Iran to ship most of its low-enriched uranium stock to Russia and France for further enrichment and transformation into fuel assemblies for a medical research reactor.

Iran, agreed to the offer in principle at a meeting in Geneva last October but balked at it later. The Islamic republic said it wanted instead a simultaneous swap on Iranian soil.
