Special Report: 7.1-magnitude Quake Hit Qinghai, China |
Hundreds of people injured in the earthquake are being treated in large cities away from the quake zone. China's Health Ministry says 4,910 people have received treatment so far.
Over 1,000 medical workers are either in, or en route to the affected area, with more leaving Friday. There have been no reported outbreaks of epidemics or other public health incidents. The ministry has instructed medical teams to focus on treating severe cases to reduce the death toll, and to work towards preventing the outbreak of diseases.
Drinking water and food safety are also top concerns. The logistic department of the People's Liberation Army has also dispatched a quake-relief crew staffed by 600 health personnel to the quake zone.
