Special Report: 8.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Chile |
A strong earthquake shook northern Chile on Friday. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
The country's National Emergency Office says the only known damage came from rocks falling on roadways. The US Geological Survey says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.2, and was centered about 600 kilometers north of the nation's capital, Santiago. The tremor struck at 11:52 A.M. local time. The seismic shift occurred far away from the epicenter of last month's devastating magnitude 8.8 earthquake, and subsequent tsunami, which combined to claim 452 lives.
