Greeks mark national day

Greeks have lined in Athens' streets to celebrate the country's National Day. But unlike previous years, there was no military parade. The scaled-down festivities come amid the nation's severe economic crisis.

Greeks dressed in traditional costumes paraded down the capital's main streets to celebrate the country's independence. But this year there was a notable military absence, with no tanks or aircraft.

Struggling with a massive debt, Greece has implemented a tough austerity plan that involves wide cuts in public spending and hefty tax increases.

In his National Day message, President Karolos Papoulias called on Greeks to unite during the crisis.
