Highlights of work report of China's Supreme People's Court

Let's take a quick look at the highlights from the work report of China's Supreme People's Court.

In 2009, the Supreme Court examined more than 13,000 cases, and concluded nearly 12 thousand. Those numbers are up 26 percent, and 52 percent, over the previous year's totals.

Chinese courts handled more than 11 million cases overall, a figure which was 6.3 percent higher. Among those, 10.5 million cases were wrapped up, 7.2 percent more than the year before.

A total of 767-thousand criminal cases were finished in 2009, and nearly 100-thousand suspects were sentenced.

Chinese courts concluded 5.8 million civil cases, an increase of 7.7 percent.

Among those, more than 2 million cases were related to disputes in marriages or medical services. That's a rise of 7 percent.

Chinese courts wrapped up more than 120 thousand administrative cases, a volume 10.5 percent higher than the previous year.

On the work agenda for 2010, the Supreme Court is pledging to provide a judicial guarantee for social development.

The body will also put forth reforms in the judicial system, further promoting its effectiveness.

It will continue to fight against judicial corruption, further strengthen infrastructure, and enhance legal supervision.
