Special Report: 2010 NPC & CPPCC Sessions |

China is pledging greater supervision and competence in its judicial system. The heads of the Supreme People's Court and Supreme People's Procuratorate made these promises at this year's session of the National People's Congress on Thursday.

Strengthening the legal system ... The government knows it can never relax its guard.

The procurator-general spelled out the cornerstone of his office to the joint session of lawmakers and advisors: investigation and prevention of any abuse of power.

Cao Jianming, Procurator-general Supreme People's Procuratorate, said, "Chinese procurators investigated 2670 government officials above the county level, including eight at the provincial and ministerial level. We also investigated 9355 government workers suspected of dereliction of duty, malfeasance, and infringements of people's rights."

The report says the procuratorial body will improve mechanisms in resolving social disputes and deepen judicial reform.
