Argentina, Britain in oil dispute

Nearly 30 years after Argentina and Britain fought a war over control of the Falkland Islands, Argentina is angry that UK firms are searching for oil and gas in the seas around them.

Some Argentine war veterans say their country would be willing to go back into battle if Britain goes ahead with plans to drill for oil in the South Atlantic.

The recent dispute has flared over the right to drill in the waters around the Falkland Islands, which Argentines call Las Malvinas. Geologists believe the region contains substantial energy reserves.

The veterans gathered in Buenos Aires' main central plaza for a low-key protest in support of government measures announced this week, requiring permits for boats sailing from Argentine ports to the islands.
