A Sri Lankan court has granted an order to proceed with a legality case in the arrest of General Sarath Fonseka.
On Monday, a three bench panel granted leave to proceed in the fundamental rights application questioning the legality of the arrest. The court order was given despite strong objections from the government represented by the Attorney General. The court ordered the state to file objections within four weeks and said it would consider interim relief this month.
Troops arrested Fonseka, who quit the army in November to enter the presidential race, for allegedly plotting against the president. Hundreds of lawyers poured out of the court and held a silent protest Monday afternoon after the application filed by Fonseka was taken up by the Supreme Court.
