One day after the US suggested new sanctions against his country, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced that the Islamic Republic had produced its first batch of enriched uranium. He made the remarks at the 31st anniversary of the nation's 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Facing thousands of cheering supporters, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Thursday that his country has produced its first batch of uranium enriched to a higher level. He added that Iran will triple its production of low grade nuclear material in the future.
Ahmadinejad said, "The first package of 20 percent enriched fuel has been produced and provided to scientists. In Natanz, we are producing and stockpiling several kilos of this every day and, God willing, daily production will be tripled in the near future."
