Special Report: Strong Quake Hits Haiti |
The Chinese medical team in Haiti is working flat-out in Port-au-Prince to help as many people as possible. 40 workers are sparing no effort at the makeshift hospital to treat survivors.
The doctors started their work earlier on their third day in Haiti. The canvas Chinese hospital is attracting hundreds of people. Many are women and children. Doctors treat the patients with the help of interpreters and by using body language. But not every patient is cooperative.
A Chinese doctor said, "The baby is suffering from cold and undernourishment. They don't have enough food. Babies are usually easily scared when they are not comfortable."
Under a baking sun in the Caribbean nation, medical workers are soon soaked with sweat.
However, they're too busy attending patients to take time off for rest.
Wang Yurong, Head of Chinese Medical Team, said, "Our gynecologists and pediatricians are all here, most patients are women and children. They account for more than 70 percent of the total number. So we use more manpower for these people."
Due to the poor sanitation situation after the earthquake, gynecological diseases and urinary infections are spreading widely.
Anti-epidemic experts in the team have been handing out booklets in French, explaining measures to prevent disease.
