China has voiced strong opposition to a US arms sale to Taiwan. The Chinese Foreign Ministry urged the US to abandon such activities that harm China-US ties, and to properly handle the two countries' differences in the new year.

China-US ties were highlighted in the Chinese Foreign Ministry's first press conference this year. Spokeswoman Jiang Yu urged the two countries to expand exchanges and resolve differences for the long-term development of their relationship. Recent reports said the US is likely to approve a new arms sale plan to Taiwan. Jiang warned the US of serious consequences from the sale. She said the Taiwan and Tibet issues are China's key national interests, and China has expressed its deep concern.
