US questions Iran's peaceful nuclear intentions

The US says Iran's latest missile test undercuts its claims to peaceful intentions regarding its nuclear program, but adds that the launch suggests no significant advance in Teheran's military capabilities.

Ian Kelly, Spokesman of US State Department, said, "At a time when the international community has offered Iran opportunities to begin to build trust and confidence, these kinds of tests can only undermine Iran's claims of peaceful intentions. I think that these kinds of actions will only increase the seriousness and resolve of the international community in our efforts to hold Iran accountable for its continued defiance of international obligations on its nuclear program."

The comments came after Iran claimed on Wednesday that it has successfully test fired an upgraded version of its longest-range, solid-fuel missile.

Iran says the missile is faster and harder to shoot down. Iranian state television reported it was the Sajjil-2 a two-stage missile with a range of about 2-thousand kilometers. The Defense Ministry says the launch is aimed at enhancing Iran's military power.
