Pakistani police say they have picked up five men from the US in a raid on a house in the eastern province of Punjab. American diplomats there say they are aware of the report, but cannot confirm that the men are in custody.

Pakistani police say the five college-age men are under investigation for possible links to extremism.

The police haven't identified them, but say three are of Pakistani descent, one is Egyptian, and the other is Yemeni.

Howard University confirmed that one of them is enrolled there as a dental student, but declines further comment.

In Washington, officials believe the five are the young men reported missing under mysterious circumstances. Their relatives and FBI agents have been searching for them for more than a week.

The relatives say one of the young men left behind what investigators call a "farewell video message." In the video he talked about defending Muslims, and showed images of US casualties.

The FBI's local office in Washington says an investigation is ongoing, and agents are trying to help find the five men.
