Special Report: UN climate change conference in Copenhagen |
Nepal is warning the world of the impact of global warming on the Himalayas. The statement was made during an unusual cabinet meeting held on Mount Everest, also known as Mount Qomolangma.
Nepal's prime minister and more than 20 high officials, met near the Everest Base Camp at an altitude of over 5-thousand meters above sea level. The cabinet passed the Everest Declaration which is to be presented at the Copenhagen summit. The Declaration calls upon the world to minimize the negative effects of climate change on Mount Everest and other mountains in the Himalayan range.
The cabinet also decided to expand Nepal's conservation areas. Scientists say the Himalayan glaciers are melting at an alarming rate due to global warming.
