NATO says over 20 countries plan to send more troops to Afghanistan following US President Barack Obama's increased commitment.

NATO foreign ministers gathered in Brussels to discuss the troops increase. NATO Secretary-General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, says he expects at least 5 thousand extra troops.

However, this number is still short of the 10 thousand troops and trainers Pentagon officials are seeking. Rasmussen added that there are currently significant shortfalls of army and police trainers in the country.

Of the over 100 thousand NATO-led troops are currently stationed in Afghanistan, 68 thousand are Americans.
