Top EU officials, have celebrated the implementation of the Treaty of Lisbon. Tuesday marked, the end of 8 years of wrangling and setbacks, in the course of the institutional construction of the bloc.
Guests at the ceremony in Lisbon, included the first EU President, Herman van Rompuy, and Catherine Ashton, Europe's new foreign policy chief.
The treaty is designed to ensure the bloc has more say in world affairs. It features new rules to accelerate decision-making, so the EU can respond more swiftly to global issues.
