Britain is also contributing more troops to Afghanistan. It will send 500 soldiers in December, increasing the number of British troops there to about 10 thousand.

The move is part of a broader surge in NATO-led troop levels to tackle the worsening violence and train Afghan forces.

A recent spike in casualties in the eight-year war against the Taliban has forced NATO military chiefs to rethink their strategy.

In October, Gordon Brown said he would be prepared to send extra troops provided other countries do too.

So far, several countries including Slovakia, Georgia and South Korea have already pledged to do so.
