Premier Wen Jiabao delivered a keynote speech at the Cairo headquarters of the Arab League.
He expressed the belief that seeking harmony in differences, and pursuing development through communication, should be the touchstone of all civilizations.
The Premier's speech was titled "Respecting The Diversity Of Civilizations."
He said Chinese and Islamic civilizations have both contributed immeasurably to the progress and development of human society.
With 20 million people from 10 ethnic groups who follow Islam in China, the country fully respects their religious beliefs, cultural traditions, habits and customs.
Wen Jiabao, Chinese Premier, said, "The different beliefs of ethnic groups and religions contribute to the diversity of civilization. And this must be recognized when talking about respect for the diversity of civilizations. China is a nation with many ethnic groups and religions. The Chinese government has always upheld and continually seeks to improve regional ethnic autonomy. This has been done to ensure equality among ethnic groups and to accelerate economic development in ethnic regions. It has also upheld policies protecting the freedom of religious beliefs, and brought the role of religious communities and believers into full play in promoting economic and social development."
Wen Jiabao said China and Arab nations have a long history of supporting one another, and share the same mission of allowing ancient civilizations to shine in the modern era.
