Iraq's President says he believes Iran's new nuclear facility is for peaceful purposes. Jalal Talabani addressed the media in New York after meeting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Responding to a question about Iran's announcement of new nuclear facilities, the Iraqi president says he believes Iran is opposed to nuclear weapons and their program is for peaceful purposes.
Jalal Talabani, Iraq's President, said, "Our position is very clear, we are for having the right of all nations for peaceful energy and technology and we are against any producing of the bomb in the Middle East. We want the area free from nuclear weapons."
Talibani has also asked the UN chief to send a representative to Iraq to investigate terrorist activities.
Lingering tensions between once dominant Sunnis, majority Shi'ites and ethnic Kurds are threatening to destabilize the country.
