Russia's top general, Nikolai Maka-rov, says his country is not abandoning plans to install short-range Is-kander missiles in its western region. Maka-rov says it is the president's responsibility to make this decision.
He also stresses the United States will still develop a missile defense network that will be sea-based. The remarks contradict what Deputy Defense Minister Vladimir Popov-kin said Saturday.
On Thursday, US President Barack Obama announced a decision to scrap a Bush-era land-based missile defense system. He says he would initiate a "phased, adaptive approach" for Eastern Europe.
