The US commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, says the conflict can still be won, but only with a revised strategy.

The new US commander announced his conclusion after a long-awaited review. He describes the situation in Afghanistan as "serious" but says "success was achievable."

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates, while touring an aircraft facility in Forth Worth Texas, offered comments on the war but says he has not read the strategy.

Officials have given no indication on whether additional forces will be required to implement the new strategy. There are currently 100 thousand coalition troops stationed in Afghanistan.
