Afghanistan's election commission says President Hamid Karzai has increased the lead over his closest challenger. This was based on 35 percent of the country's polling stations.

The commission says Karzai now has 46.2 percent of the votes. Former Foreign Minister, Abdullah Abdullah, has 31.4 percent. Karzai must reach 50 percent of the ballots cast to avoid a runoff.

Saturday's results were inching closer to that threshold. Results won't be finalized until late September after allegations of fraud are investigated.
