Construction has started on Romania's national pavilion at the Shanghai 2010 World Expo. The building will take the shape of a green apple in its focus on a "green city" concept.
The pavilion's shape and "Greenopolis" logo are to reflect the importance of a healthy life, sustainable development and knowledge-based solutions for modern society.
The 2000-square meters will have multifunctional spaces including cinemas, stages, restaurants and a panoramic viewing platform.
Officials say Romania wants to highlight a city's historical and cultural heritage in order to understand, develop and translate this wisdom into a better quality of life.
The apple-shaped pavilion is the idea of a 21-year-old female designer. Her design was selected from a field of over forty submissions.
