Ding breezes into second round

With China was observing a day of national mourning for the more than 2,000 people who died in the earthquake in the Yushu, it was a somber Ding who entered the arena...requesting no music be played as he took to the table.

Leading 8-1 overnight, Ding wasted no time in booking his place in the second round.

Ding, 23, had been billed as one of the favourites to win this year's tournament after a season in which he has won more ranking points than any other player.

And he demonstrated why with a break of 88 in the opening frame of Wednesday's brief session before clinching a scrappy 11th frame to complete his win.

In round two, Ding will face either Shaun Murphy, the 2005 champion and last year's runner-up, or Gerard Greene.
